I think i'd prefer carrying a piece of paper (buT i suppose that could get sweaty or wet)
Never noticed one in a race before though but surely the course would need to be marked in terms of km or miles anyway in which case a stopwatch would work just as well?
But I guess it does stop you doing some awkward calculations in your head

I know this will mark me out as the ultimate saddo (in case you weren't aware!) but in days of old, I'd buy an indelible pen and write my 3 mile marathon split times on the back of both hands (3,6,9,12 on the left and 15,18,21 & 24 on the right - so I was never more than a 1 mile calculation from a pre-determined mile split time). Believe me, when you're out of fuel it can take you whole mile to calculate whether you're ahead or behind in the race!
However over the past few years, when pacing Clients, I pre-work the race pace and then break it down per mile across the entire race distance, ie: 1-26, create it in a Word document as a long, narrow strip of paper, print it out, fold it over (only 1/2 the size then), cover it with sellotape and then slip it inside my wrist sweatband or attach it to my race number via the safety pin so that it hangs down and I can just flip it up to check our schedule.
You can even use a highlighter to highlight alternate miles to make it easier to read when you're tired/sweaty etc! How amazing is that!!
Lucozade sport give them away as wristbands at the London marathon expo but I've found their mile split calculations to be slightly inaccurate hence I prefer to use my own.
I think the tattoo is taking it too far - although some might say (Oasis) that my obsessive-compulsive strategy is equally taking it too far!!
Certainly not worth bothering for a 5K . . !
